Rocha Medal 2014 |

Introduction to Rock Mechanics and Tunnelling |
This two-day short course is intended as an introduction to rock mechanics and tunnelling, it is also suitable for engineers and practitioners with some tunnelling experience but would like to upgrade their knowledge. It will cover both the fundamentals of rock mechanics as well the practical engineering aspects of rock tunnelling, including site investigations methods, rock mass classification, stability analysis, rock support design, instrumentation and monitoring, as well as geotechnical project work flow. Some basic concepts of NATM will also be introduced.

Tunnel Design & Construction Asia 2011, assembles asset owners from regional governments, AEC firms, geotechnical investigators, EPC contractors and material/service providers to discuss opportunities, challenges, trends and technologies in the regional tunneling industry.
By managing and reducing risk, the standards of tunneling may be increased, and Malcolm Peart, Global Tunnels Manager for SMEC International, explains that this has been clearly demonstrated on many tunneling projects around the world. However standards of tunneling vary and without the benefit of exposure to ‘best practice’ some tunneling environments leave much to be desired.
