
The
Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology (SRMEG) can
trace its origin to an interest group formed in 1998 under the Tunnelling
and Underground Society Singapore (TUCSS). Since then, the group
has grown, along with the growth in rock mechanics activities. In
July 2006 when it was re-structured into the current society. Prof
Jian ZHAO served as the first Chairman until 2002 when Dr Yingxin
ZHOU took over.
Objectives
- to
promote technical and professional development of members through
meetings, seminars and other forms of communication.

to achieve closer personal acquaintance and spirit of co-operation
among members.

to interact with other professional organisations in matters of
common interest.
- to
promote the application of research and technologies to practices
related to rock mechanics, rock engineering, and engineering geology,
and to advance the standards of rock engineering and engineering
geology practice.
Affiliations
The
SRMEG is affiliated to and acts as the National Group for the International
Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the International Association
of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). Member of the
society are automatically members of the ISRM and IAEG.
Main
Activities
The
main focus of activities for 2006 has been the organisation of the
4th Asian Rock Mechanics Symposium, officially organised by the
Tunnelling and Underground Construction Society. The Society also
co-organised the following workshops at ARMS: Workshop on Rock Dynamics,
jointly organised by SRMEG and the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics
and Engineering; Workshop on Underground Storage Facilities: jointly
organised by the Korean Society for Rock Mechanics and SRMEG.
The
Society will also be the co-organiser for ISRM 2011 International
Congress in Beijing, after winning a joint bid with CSRME to host
this prestigious event. The CSRME will be the main organiser.
Members
of the SREMG have also been actively involved in a major effort
to update the Singapore Geology (first published in 1976) led by
the Defence Science & Technology Agency in collaboration with
the Nanyang Technological University and the Building Control Authority
of Singapore.
Memberships
The
society currently has about 50 members. The following three types
of memberships are available:
- Ordinary
members;

Student members; and
- Corporate
members.
Prof
Jian ZHAO of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology is an Honorary
Member of the Society.
The
society welcomes all individuals and corporations with an interest
in rock mechanics and engineering geology to join the society.
